89% of enterprise ai agent pilots never reach production, and 61% of failures trace to scope creep and data quality. the agent worked; the job around it didn't.
the bottleneck is the boring infrastructure nobody funds.
Context
A secondary aggregator, data-today.net, dated 14 September 2026, attributes the 89% figure to Deloitte's 2026 technology trends research as reported by AI News, and mixes other surveys: a Gartner April 2026 survey of 782 infrastructure and operations leaders, in which of 1,000 budgeted projects about 120 reach production and about 34 meet ROI targets, plus Teradata, S&P Global Market Intelligence and McKinsey. The page says the sources use different methodologies.
No single original study with sample size, method, pilot population and a definition of never reaching production was located. 120 of 1,000 reaching production is a different measure, about 88%, and other pages show 88% and 95% figures from other studies, so the number moves with the definition. The 61% of failures tracing to scope creep and data quality was not found in the text read and is unverified. Denominators should not be mixed.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
