acrab's gelix 1 is a 5nm edge chip that runs up to 100b-parameter models locally, no cloud round-trip. the privacy excuse for shipping every prompt to a datacenter just lost its hardware argument.
local inference stopped being a compromise.
Context
Acrab's press release of 23 July 2026 describes its first-generation edge AI SoC on a 5-nanometer process, with a 20-core Arm CPU, a multicore NPU and 273 GB/s of unified memory bandwidth, designed to support local deployment of open-source models up to the 100 billion parameter class, sold with Agent Box, a personal edge AI system. TechPowerUp covered it on 22 July 2026.
These are vendor claims, not independent. The release says designed to support, a design target, so runs up to 100B overstates it: no quantization, tokens per second, power, price or shipping date was found. The privacy line in the note is the author's opinion; the release says local running keeps data under user control.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
