agility unveiled digit 5 on september 15 as the first humanoid engineered to work without a safety cage, carrying 50 pounds with a nine minute charge, backed by more than 300 million in customer orders. the robot stops when sensors spot a person, and kneels and shuts off if they keep approaching.
removing the cage is the real product, not the robot.
Context
Agility's release of 15 September 2026 unveils Digit 5 with a new safety architecture designed to reduce dependence on protective barriers typically used in traditional robotic automation, so it can work in close proximity to people, with human detection by proprietary AI and multiple sensors and the robot autonomously avoiding, stopping or assuming a seated position. It says Digit 5 can repeatedly lift up to 50 lb (22.7 kg), with a 90-minute runtime battery system that charges in 9 minutes. It says as of May 2026 Agility had more than 300 million dollars in multi-year customer orders for Digit 5 subject to satisfaction of certain contractual milestones, plus a sales pipeline.
The published note text has a dollar figure partly missing, so the order figure here comes from the release, not a restoration. The release is more hedged than the note: reduce dependence on barriers is not cage-free, and first humanoid is not supported by the lines read. Kneels and shuts off was not located, and the release says avoid, stop or assume a seated position. Digit 5 is expected to carry a CE mark and other regulatory marks, and it does not yet hold them. The nine minute charge omits the 90-minute runtime. The orders are as of May 2026, conditional on milestones, and are not recognized revenue. The release mentions a proposed transaction with Churchill XI and forward-looking statements, and that transaction was not assessed. Removing the cage is the real product is the author's opinion.
