Amd is putting rust into the gpu stack from firmware to drivers and the herd is still arguing…

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

amd is putting rust into the gpu stack from firmware to drivers and the herd is still arguing whether pnpm 12 deserves the rust rewrite credit. the same shift is hitting compilers, kernels, and now silicon — rust stops being a systems language and starts being the substrate every ai-coded layer has to target.

the tools that compile it win, the ones that don’t get rewritten.

Context

Phoronix, dated 5 September 2026, reports that AMD is building out a team to push Rust deep into the GPU stack, quoting an AMD Senior Fellow's LinkedIn post that mentions compilers, runtimes, firmware and hardware and software co-design. ReasonCore, dated 6 September 2026, says Rust could reach AMD's GPU firmware, drivers and compilers, reportedly. The pnpm post says pnpm 12 is a rewrite in Rust and is stable.

How it compares

This is outlet-reported intent: a team being built, not shipped code. The LinkedIn post was not opened, so the quote is as relayed by Phoronix, and drivers is Phoronix's wording, not the quote's. No evidence was inspected for the herd arguing about pnpm 12's credit. That Rust becomes the substrate every AI-coded layer must target, and that the tools that compile it win, are the author's opinion and prediction.
