apollo research shipped watcher on september 18, a layer that intercepts ai agent actions before execution instead of logging them after the fact, backed by an ecosystem of 106 companies. guardrails are moving from post-hoc traces to a choke point in the loop.
the question is who gets to sit between the agent and the action.
Context
Apollo Research's post of 2 September 2026 announces Watcher Live, a real-time AI agent monitor that blocks dangerous actions such as data leaks, repo deletions or prod outages. Every action passes deterministic auto-approve and auto-deny rules, then a triage model, then a higher-accuracy gateway model. It supports Claude Code and Codex, has an SDK for others and a Lite mode with 1-3% overhead. Apollo's docs describe blocking review before calls run and trailing review afterwards.
Pre-execution interception is supported by Apollo's own post, though the docs show it also does trailing review, so it is not only instead of logging. No first-party date of 18 September was found; Apollo's dates are 1 August for self-serve and 2 September for Watcher Live, and 18 September is the date of a secondary article. The 106 companies appears only in that secondary security-news article, which calls it an observability ecosystem, and no first-party list was read, so the number and the word backed are unverified. Who sits between the agent and the action is the author's opinion.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
