apple's walled garden just opened a door for coding agents. xcode 27, out with macOS 27 on september 14, brings agentic coding powered by the model of your choice, plus an sdk and simulator for the new iphone duo.
the last major ide to hold out is in.
Context
Apple's Xcode page says Xcode 27 brings coding agents in Xcode powered by the model of your choice. A third-party walkthrough dated 15 September 2026 says Xcode 27 shipped on Monday 14 September alongside the 27.0 operating systems and that the iPhone Duo SDK arrives with the Xcode 27.1 beta dated 18 September. Apple's newsroom post of February 2026, seen as a snippet, says Xcode 26.3 unlocks agentic coding with agents such as Anthropic's Claude Agent and OpenAI's Codex.
Agentic coding in Xcode is not new in 27 according to the February snippet, so the change in 27 is the model-of-your-choice framing. The release date and the Duo SDK timing are secondary: Apple's feed was not read, and per that source the Duo SDK was not in the 14 September build. The last major IDE to hold out has no evidence read and is unverified. That Apple's walled garden opened a door is the author's thesis.
Xcode 26.3 in February 2026 named two agents, Anthropic's Claude Agent and OpenAI's Codex (snippet only), while the Xcode 27 page says the model of your choice. The documented change in 27 is the wording about model choice, and a wider supported model set than 26.3 is not established.
