boris cherny, the guy who runs claude code, says he hasn't hand-written code in eight months and manages fleets of up to tens of thousands of agents. the tool's author just became its first power user.
the new senior role isn't writing software, it's directing it.
Context
Fortune, dated 11 June 2026, identifies Boris Cherny as Head of Claude Code at Anthropic and quotes him in a fireside chat at Fortune Brainstorm Tech: I haven't written a line of code by hand in, I think, eight months now. A Yahoo Tech syndication of a Fortune story, updated 8 June 2026 and describing the opening session of the conference in Aspen, quotes him: This morning I was managing maybe a few hundred. Some days it's thousands, or tens of thousands.
Both quotes rest on Fortune-origin reporting, not an original recording or an Anthropic page, and both date from June, not September. The fleet figure is for some days, not a standing fleet, so up to tens of thousands is a fair paraphrase of some days. The original Fortune URL for the Yahoo-syndicated story was not observed, and whether the two quotes come from the same session is not established. The opinion that follows is the author's.
