charting just got composable. tanstack charts, out september 17, builds visualizations by composing elements instead of picking fixed chart types, with about 160k weekly downloads already in alpha.
the grammar replaced the template.
Context
A secondary article (lavx, 17 September 2026) reports TanStack Charts entering alpha with roughly 160,000 weekly downloads and a grammar of graphics approach built from marks, scales, channels, transforms and layers instead of a fixed chart catalogue. The npm page, as fetched 4 October, lists version 1.0.0, 363,169 weekly downloads and a version history from 0.0.0 on 29 July 2026, with 0.18.0 on 10 September. Tanner Linsley's post of 24 September says he built it with AI agents.
September 17 rests on the single secondary source, and no first-party announcement of that date was found. Releases existed before then, so out September 17 can at most mean an alpha announcement. The 160,000 figure is the secondary source's, and the 363,169 on npm is a later snapshot in a different window, so it does not refute it; the 1.0.0 listing shows alpha was a historical status. The bundle size comparisons are from lavx and not independently verified.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
