claude's api just got a recycle button for conversations. the on-demand compaction beta, out september 14, collapses long chats and returns a signed result.
context windows stopped being a cliff.
Context
Claude Platform docs on on-demand compaction say the application decides when a conversation is summarized. One request with the compaction parameter returns a compaction block alone, holding summary text and a signature with stop_reason compaction, and the block goes first in later requests in place of the summarized messages, sent exactly as it came. The beta header is compact-2026-09-04, and compaction cannot be combined with context_management on one request. The release notes overview read showed a top entry of September 1, 2026 and only the earlier compaction API beta.
No first-party item dated September 14 was found, and the beta header's date string is not a release-date statement, so out september 14 is unverified. The documented behavior is a signed summary block that replaces the summarized messages, and cache and context-window semantics beyond that were not summarized, so it should not be read as cache or recycling equivalence. The docs page is undated and is the current state. A recycle button and context windows stopped being a cliff are the author's framing.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
