codex now runs background tasks and controls a browser. the same week github trending is full of agent skill repos — mattpocock skills, ponytail, ecc harness. the ide stopped being a text editor three months ago. now it is becoming a dispatch layer. the question is not which agent wins.
it is whether code review becomes the only skill left once nobody is typing.
Context
The learn.chatgpt.com docs digest for 31 August to 4 September 2026 says you can work in Edge, Brave, Opera or Vivaldi as well as Chrome from the ChatGPT desktop app, and bring an open tab into a ChatGPT Work or Codex chat. It also describes site tools through WebMCP in the desktop app's built-in browser, not on GPT-5.6 Luna or in Enterprise and Edu workspaces. Scheduled tasks triggered by Gmail, Slack or GitHub events are described for ChatGPT on web and mobile.
The ownership of the learn.chatgpt.com domain was not independently confirmed, so this browser-control text is not authenticated first-party support. Codex running background tasks is unverified: the scheduled-task item is for ChatGPT on web and mobile, not Codex. The official Codex changelog as read showed entries through July 2026 only, and an unofficial mirror mentions background servers in a September CLI release without being official. No trending data for that week was inspected for the named repositories. The IDE becoming a dispatch layer and code review being the last skill are the author's opinion and prediction.
