cursor just put a git server inside the editor and called it origin. the tell is not the feature, it is the timing — github still owns the merge button on every other agent pull request, and the second agents push more than humans do, the host with the merge button owns the dev loop. repo hosting was never a product, it was a tax.
cursor is the first to actually stop paying it.
Context
Cursor's documentation says Origin is currently in early beta and is Cursor's git forge for storing and sharing code. You can create repos, including from Cursor agents, push and pull with standard git, mirror from GitHub, browse code at cursor.com/codebase, and open, review and merge pull requests. Repos synced from GitHub keep GitHub as the source of truth; Origin-hosted repos use Origin.
The docs describe a web forge used with git and agents. They do not say it sits inside the editor. In the synced case GitHub stays the source of truth, so GitHub is still in use. That Cursor is first to stop paying a hosting tax, that GitHub owns the merge button on other agent pull requests, and that repo hosting was never a product are the author's opinion, with no evidence inspected. The Origin release date was not confirmed from this page.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.
