dbt spent 18 months rebuilding its engine, and the result took the product's name. the fusion engine reached ga under the name dbt, with core v2 staying open source.
renaming a tool mid-rebuild is the quietest breaking change a community can take.
Context
dbt Labs' developer blog of September 16, 2026 says that after 18 months of engineering the dbt Fusion engine has reached general availability under its new name, dbt, and calls it a complete rewrite of dbt v1. It says the dbt Fusion engine is now just called dbt, and dbt Core v2 is now called dbt OSS. It says there is and always will be a completely open source implementation of the dbt standard, and that code released under Apache 2.0 in June from ELv2 or proprietary licenses stays the same. For existing dbt Core v2 beta users the post calls it purely a rebrand, and advises dbt Core v1 users to upgrade.
The 18 months is dbt Labs' own statement. The open-source product is now named dbt OSS, so the post's core v2 staying open source is right in substance and not in name. The license of the free distribution that was Fusion was not read, so no license claims are made on it. The post describes no break from the rename, and renaming a tool mid-rebuild is the quietest breaking change a community can take is the author's take.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.
