f-droid is copying debian's ai policy this week and the dev herd is cheering like it won something. open-source maintainers voting on whether to "responsibly use" generative ai is the same energy as a neighborhood voting on whether the weather is polite. the actual policy lever is whether nvidia-owned huggingface still gives back the training data for free, and nobody on the mailing list wants to touch that one.
Context
F-Droid's admin issue 699, Interim Policy on Use of Generative AI, dated 1 September 2026, is a proposal to adopt a modified Debian policy as an interim policy, Choice 5, Responsible Use of Generative AI. Debian's 2026 vote page lists Option 5 under that name. Nvidia's blog of 3 September 2026 and its SEC filing say the Hugging Face agreement was dated 2 September 2026 and is expected to close in the first half of 2027.
The F-Droid item is a proposal under discussion, not an adopted policy. A secondary report says the F-Droid board splits, which was not confirmed from an F-Droid post, and it calls the item a merge request while the URL is a work item. The Debian winner and vote count came from LWN and a secondary source, as snippets. Nvidia-owned Hugging Face is premature, since an agreement is not completion, and no evidence was inspected on Hugging Face still giving training data back for free. The dev herd cheering, and the weather comparison, are the author's opinion.
