git operations just became a service. uber built gitfarm to run git as a managed platform for large-scale monorepos, covered on infoq september 8.
the tool every developer runs locally is now an internal service.
Context
Uber Engineering's post of July 9, 2026 and InfoQ's article of August 28, 2026 by Leela Kumili describe GitFarm, which runs git as a service. A gRPC API sits behind a Gateway that authenticates and authorizes, backend clusters run commands in isolated ephemeral sandboxes, bare repository clones are kept in sync by push-based updates and periodic fetches, and pre-warmed checkouts are mounted into sandboxes. Uber reports checkouts in under 500 ms against 10 to 15 minute cold starts, client-side resource use down by more than 80 percent, and one code-ownership service going from 70+ cores to 16 CPU and from 400-600 GB to 32 GB of memory. It has been in production at Uber since early 2025.
The InfoQ article read is dated August 28, not September 8, and the Uber post is July 9, with an arXiv version dated April 13 seen only as a snippet. The results are Uber-reported and not independent. GitFarm is not a source control management system, so git operations became a service means a managed platform for running git in large monorepos. The tool every developer runs locally is now an internal service is the author's take. This is a different Uber system from the M3DB placement work.

- Roadmap items such as sparse checkouts, per InfoQ.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.
