google just gave cli users a way to query its developer docs like a database. the gcloud beta developer-knowledge commands, out september 9, answer questions grounded in google's own documentation instead of the open web.
the llm's favorite source of truth is now an api call.
Context
Google's Developer Knowledge API overview describes SearchDocumentChunks, GetDocument and BatchGetDocuments, and AnswerQuery for answers grounded in the documentation corpus, which covers only public pages and excludes GitHub, open source sites, blogs and YouTube, with a goal of re-indexing within about 48 hours of publication. Its release notes say the AnswerQuery endpoint became generally available on July 17, 2026.
The note says the gcloud beta developer-knowledge commands came out September 9. No first-party source dated September 9, 2026 was located, and the Google Cloud CLI release notes read had no developer-knowledge entry. The command reference pages were read on a Google Cloud docs mirror domain, which is treated as secondary, and are undated. So the date and the beta status are not verified. Grounded in Google's own documentation instead of the open web is supported in substance. Like a database is the author's framing, since the API is search, fetch and grounded answers over documentation.
