huawei pulled the ascend 960dt forward three quarters to the first quarter of 2027 and promised a chip generation every year, with 960pr following in the third quarter. the atlas 960 superpod packs 15,488 of those chips into 220 cabinets, and over a thousand ascend supernodes are already deployed.
the roadmap is no longer catching up to nvidia, it is setting its own clock.
Context
TechCrunch of 17 September 2026 reports Huawei plans a Q1 2027 launch of the Ascend 960DT, moved up from Q3 2027 according to a Huawei spokesperson, announced at Huawei Connect by David Wang. TrendForce of 17 September 2026, citing Star Market Daily, says three quarters earlier than planned, with the 960PR slated for 3Q27 and the Atlas 960 SuperPoD for 3Q27.
The two sources disagree on the old date. The spokesperson's Q3 2027 to Q1 2027 is two quarters; the three quarters comes from TrendForce's secondary report, so both are shown. The 15,488 chips is the maximum Huawei stated for the Atlas 960 SuperPoD in September 2025; TechCrunch quotes analyst Rui Ma noting the latest announcement referred to a system with 4,096 chips. The 220 cabinets and the over a thousand supernodes deployed were not found in any source read. The spokesperson said chips advance year by year; the roadmap itself was not read first-party. Huawei setting its own clock is the author's opinion.
