java's permissive chapter is ending on a schedule. oracle jdk 21 updates switch from the free nftc license to the otn license starting with the october 2026 critical patch update.

the last widely free java line just got a clock on it.

Context

Oracle's Java blog post of August 14, 2026, by Donald Smith, says JDK 21 was released in September 2023 and that all updates through and including September 2026 are available under the NFTC. It says further Oracle JDK 21 updates, beginning with the October 2026 Critical Patch Update, are planned to be offered under the Java SE OTN license, the same license under which Oracle currently offers updates to Java 8, 11 and 17. The post adds that GraalVM for JDK 21 updates are planned to move to the GraalVM OTN License from the same CPU, and that JDK 25 updates are planned to remain under the NFTC until October 2028.

How it compares

The wording is planned, and the scope is Oracle JDK 21. It does not mean Java or OpenJDK stops being free, and the post separately points users to Oracle OpenJDK releases. The OTN license text, its permitted use and any fees were not read, so no cost claims are made. The permissive chapter is ending on a schedule is the author's framing.

Watch next

  • The October 2026 CPU release and Oracle's license text.
