kimi code shipped a desktop app that puts the browser, terminal, and multiple agents in one window, with agent client protocol support across vs code, zed, and jetbrains. the coding agent stopped being an ide feature and became the workspace.

plugins and skills will be the battleground, and the ide will be a shell for them.

Context

Kimi's what's-new docs say Kimi Code Desktop was officially available on 17 September 2026 for macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Windows, carrying the agent core of Kimi Code CLI into a graphical interface with a browser in the right panel with shared page context, goal and plan modes, and long tasks that can move to the background. The ACP reference says the kimi acp command lets ACP clients such as Zed and JetBrains AI Chat drive Kimi Code CLI sessions over JSON-RPC.

How it compares

The launch date is first-party and one day before the note. The browser in the window is supported. A terminal and multiple agents in the same window were not seen in the desktop text read, so they are unverified for the desktop app. The ACP page names Zed and JetBrains AI Chat, not VS Code, and documents the CLI's ACP mode, not a desktop feature, so across VS Code is unverified. Plugins and skills will be the battleground is a prediction. Unofficial desktop wrappers for the CLI exist on GitHub and are not the subject. The coding agent became the workspace is the author's opinion.
