mckinsey found 40 percent of large enterprises are now scaling ai agents, up from 27 percent a year ago, while smaller companies stayed flat at 22 percent. coding agents lead the way at 31 percent inside big firms.

the gap is not about the technology, it is about which companies can afford the operational cost of deployment.

Context

A trade outlet, idm.net.au, dated 27 August 2026, describes McKinsey's 2026 State of AI survey: an online survey from 4 May to 8 June 2026 with 1,719 responses from 97 nations, 36% from organisations with more than US$1 billion annual revenue, weighted by each nation's share of global GDP. It reports the share of large organisations scaling agents in one or more functions rose from 27% to 40%, smaller organisations stayed flat at 22%, and about two in ten organisations are scaling software coding agents, 31% at larger enterprises.

How it compares

These figures are secondary only. McKinsey's own 2026 report text could not be inspected, since the page fetched was the earlier 2025 article, and the exact question wording and base were not located. Large means about 1 billion dollars in revenue per the secondary description, the survey is of self-reporting respondents weighted by GDP, and it is not a count of enterprises. That coding agents lead, versus other agent types, was not verified. Scaling is McKinsey's definition and was not inspected for 2026. The cause, which companies can afford the operational cost, is the author's opinion, and a McKinsey piece on agent economics is not evidence for it.
