microsoft just shipped project zenith for win11 with a 64gb unified-memory floor and 250 gb/s bandwidth. that is the first time an os ships with a hardware minimum for being an ai developer.
the upgrade tax finally has a receipt.
Context
The Windows Developer Blog of 4 September 2026 gives the device spec for Project Zenith as 64 GB or more of unified memory and 250 GB/s or more of memory bandwidth, first on AMD's Ryzen AI Halo, with more devices in the coming months as the post puts it. Tom's Hardware says it will debut on that platform.
The post is an announcement of a Windows experience for named developer-class devices. It does not show it shipped, and it is not a minimum for all of Windows 11. I found no evidence on whether it is the first OS with a hardware minimum for AI developers. The upgrade tax line is the author's opinion.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.
