microsoft just wrote red lines its models cannot cross. the september 14 draft code of conduct bans resisting shutdown, widening scope and hiding reasoning from auditors, with a six week consultation.

the model got a leash.

Context

Microsoft AI's post of September 14, 2026 presents a first draft Code of Conduct for MAI models, open for consultation for the next six weeks. It says the Code is designed to ensure MAI models will never resist human interruption, correction or shutdown, and will not widen their own scope, take on goals no human has given them, or hide their reasoning from the people auditing them, plus Absolute Constraints. It describes the Code as standards against which Microsoft will ultimately evaluate and train.

How it compares

The scope is MAI models, those developed by Microsoft AI, and not all Microsoft or partner models. This is a draft and a stated intention and training standard, not a tested enforcement result, and bans is the note's word. The linked PDF was not text-inspected. The consultation closes about six weeks after September 14. The model got a leash is the author's take.
