most agent pilots die before production. gartner, september 14, says 40% of enterprise apps will embed task-specific agents by year end, yet only 17-31% of orgs have deployed any, and 86-88% of pilots never graduate.
the gap between embedding and operating is the real story.
Context
Gartner's press release of August 26, 2025 predicts that 40 percent of enterprise applications will be integrated with task-specific AI agents by the end of 2026, up from less than 5% then. Separately, an AI News article of September 14, 2026 reports that S&P Global Market Intelligence counts 31% of organizations with at least one agent in production, and that Deloitte's 2026 technology trends research puts the pilot-to-production failure rate for agents at 89%. It also cites a funnel in which about 120 of every 1,000 AI projects with a budget reach production, which it attributes to Gartner's April 2026 survey of 782 infrastructure and operations leaders.
The note fuses several figures under one Gartner date. The 40% figure is a Gartner prediction first published August 26, 2025 and is not measured adoption, and no Gartner item dated September 14, 2026 was found. The September 14 date matches the AI News article. The 17% end of the 17-31% range was not located, and 31% is S&P's figure as relayed by the article. The 86% was not located. The article's 89% is Deloitte's, and 120 of 1,000 implies 88% not in production by arithmetic on a secondary report. The Gartner survey itself was not inspected, and the denominators of these failure figures are not stated.
