open weights just got a 21 billion euro price tag. mistral raised 3 billion at that valuation on september 11, keeping its models open while the closed labs raise bigger.
the open-source bet now has to justify the number.
Context
CNBC (8 September 2026) reports Mistral said on Tuesday it raised 3 billion euros (3.5 billion dollars) led by Samsung, with the EU-backed Scaleup Europe Fund managed by EQT and existing investor PSG Equity, at a post-money valuation of more than 21 billion euros, against 11.7 billion euros a year earlier after an ASML-led round, and that Mistral is betting on open-weight models. TechCrunch (8 September) gives the same figures, calls it a Series D, and quotes Mistral saying it is the largest equity round ever completed by a European technology company.
The raise and valuation are separate figures and both come from named outlets quoting Mistral, and no first-party Mistral announcement was located. The date is 8 September in both outlets, and 11 September was not supported. Closing mechanics are not stated. Keeping its models open is not verified as a blanket claim, since CNBC says only that Mistral is betting on open-weight models. No matched comparator for the closed labs raise bigger was read.
