openai codex just got the upgrade it needed to pressure claude code, and the marketing fight is now about long-horizon repo edits. the real fight is the harness — who owns the file format the agent reads, who owns the context window, who owns the eval. every week the model gets 10% smarter and the harness gets 10x more lock-in.
by 2027 switching coding agents will mean rewriting your skills folder.
Context
OpenAI's Astra page of 3 September 2026 says it is updating the Codex harness for computer-use speed, with 1.9x faster completion than GPT-5.6 Sol on Mind2Web, and that Astra keeps notes across context windows in Codex. Secondary reports say Codex CLI 0.153.0 shipped on 3 September 2026.
The Astra figures are OpenAI's own, vendor-reported and not independent. The learn.chatgpt.com Codex changelog shows September entries, but its domain ownership is unconfirmed, so it is not counted as authenticated first-party support, and its entries are later than the note. The CLI version rests on snippets of secondary reports and is unverified. That this pressures Claude Code, and that switching will mean rewriting your skills folder by 2027, are the author's opinion and prediction, with no inspected evidence.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
