openai doubled its codex for open source program to 10,000 maintainers, giving them six months of chatgpt pro, codex security, and api credits to automate pr review and releases. the ai labs are now paying the people whose packages they were trained on.
that's the open source business model now.
Context
OpenAI's Codex for Open Source page lists six months of ChatGPT Pro with Codex, Codex Security access reviewed case by case, and API credits through the Codex Open Source Fund, with a 1 million dollar fund. SecurityOnline, dated 16 September 2026, reports a second round with slots doubled from 5,000 to 10,000, and a search snippet quoting a Charlie Marsh post says the same.
The program terms are first-party, but the 10,000 appears only in secondary text, so the doubled cap is secondary-supported. The 10,000 are grant slots, not confirmed recipients, and Codex Security is conditional for core maintainers, not guaranteed to all. That labs are now paying the people whose packages they were trained on is the author's opinion, with no evidence about training data inspected.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
