openai hit its automated research intern goal and the price is visible. a september 6 post shows 3.1 agent-workdays per human workday, with the median researcher spending over $600 a day on api calls.
agentic research is now a line item, not a demo.
Context
OpenAI's post of 6 September 2026 says that according to its measurements it has reached the goal, announced the previous fall, of an automated research intern by September, defined as a system that can carry out well-defined research tasks under human direction. It says by mid-August the median researcher used more than 600 dollars per day of inference at API prices and the research organization used 3.1 agent-workdays per human workday. The post calls its measurement efforts preliminary.
Goal met is OpenAI's own preliminary measurement, not independent. The 600 dollars is an API-price equivalent and not necessarily cash spent, and the 3.1 and 600 figures are mid-August measurements and not 6 September values. The 600 is the median among researchers ranked by agent usage, and 3.1 is aggregate across the research organization. The 2028 automated researcher target is a plan. Agentic research is now a line item, not a demo is the author's take.
