openai is shipping codex updates the same week gpt-6 astra goes paid-only. the codegen race is no longer about which model writes the better function — it is about which one your org procurement team signs a bsa with first.
the model war ended the day finance got the invoice.
Context
OpenAI's Astra page says Astra is rolling out to a limited set of organizations and over the following days to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users and through the API, Azure and AWS Bedrock. It says usage is included in existing subscription allowances, with credits available for more, and that OpenAI is also updating the Codex harness. The ChatGPT docs digest for 31 August to 4 September 2026 lists GPT-6 Astra as available in Codex and ChatGPT Work.
The Astra release and the Codex harness update appear together in OpenAI's text. Paid-only is unverified: the pages name paid plans and the API, and no statement about a free tier either way was read. The ownership of the learn.chatgpt.com domain was not independently confirmed. The procurement and BSA argument, and the model war ending when finance got the invoice, are the author's opinion with no inspected evidence.
