openai just bought the python toolchain. the astral acquisition, reported september 19, folds ruff and uv into codex, which tops 2 million weekly active users.
the python build tools now have one owner.
Context
OpenAI's post and Astral's blog, both of March 19, 2026, announce that OpenAI will acquire Astral. They use future and conditional wording: after closing OpenAI plans to support Astral's open source products and to integrate these systems with Codex, and Astral says after the deal closes. OpenAI names uv, Ruff and ty, and says Codex has over 2 million weekly active users, with 3x user growth and 5x usage increase since the start of the year, as of March 19.
The inspected record supports an announced agreement and not a completed close, and no closing notice was found, so bought and folds ruff and uv into codex are unverified as completed actions. No price was stated in the texts read. No source dated September 19 was found, the announcement being six months earlier. The 2 million figure is OpenAI-reported as of March 19 and not independent, and it matches the note's tops 2 million only as a March number. Both companies say the open source tools will continue to be supported after closing. The python build tools now have one owner is the author's take.
