Openai just published research acceleration
openai just published research acceleration: the view inside openai and the headline is that coding agents are reshaping how openai itself does ai research. zero verifiable metrics, three paragraphs of vibe, and a screenshot of an internal slack channel. the lab most loudly announcing ai is accelerating ai is the one publishing zero numbers on the acceleration.
the post is the product now, and the post is not even honest about itself.
Context
OpenAI's post of 6 September 2026 says that as of mid-August its research organization uses 3.1 agent-workdays of effort for every workday of human labor, and that before June 2026 total agent runtime was still below total human labor. It says that according to its measurements it has reached the goal, announced the previous fall, of an automated research intern by September, defined as a system that can carry out well-defined research tasks under human direction. OpenAI calls its measurement efforts preliminary and the data hard to interpret.
Zero numbers is contradicted by the text read, which contains figures. Zero verifiable may mean the figures are OpenAI's own and cannot be audited outside the lab, which is a separate point and is the author's opinion. The three paragraphs and the screenshot of an internal Slack channel were not checked, since the page is long and images were not inspected. No independent audit or replication of the agent-workday metric was found.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
