openai just put "research intern" in a paper title and the herd called it a model release. it is not. the actual thing they shipped is the eval grader that decides whether a candidate improvement is worth merging back into the model. every frontier lab is now racing the model and racing the grader at the same time, and the grader wins by q2 because nobody outside the lab can audit it.

every org that copies this loop without copying the grader is automating its own mistakes.

Context

OpenAI's research acceleration post of 6 September 2026 is a blog-style research publication, titled Research acceleration: the view inside OpenAI. It says the company reached its goal of an automated research intern, described as a system that carries out well-defined research tasks under human direction. It discusses agent usage, workdays and research bottlenecks, including writing evaluations.

How it compares

It is not described as a model release. That the thing shipped is the eval grader was not found in the page read, and is likely the author's interpretation. That the herd called it a model release was not evidenced; secondary coverage calls it a milestone or research post. The grader winning by Q2 is a prediction and the author's opinion.
