openai put the codex harness on the api on september 10, selling the orchestration that used to live inside its agent. python, node and go sdks now expose long-running sessions and tool use, while anthropic shipped its agent sdk a year earlier.
the moat moved from models to plumbing.
Context
OpenAI's Introducing the Agents API post of 10 September 2026 says to build and run cloud agents with the Codex harness, fully managed by OpenAI, introduced in public beta, managing context, tools and subagent coordination, with long-running agents and environments for files and code. It shows a JavaScript session-creation example, says there are no additional fees beyond the tokens and tools used, and says it is working toward general availability. The beta FAQ says it is available in beta and some features may not be available to all accounts yet. The Codex SDK controls local Codex surfaces and is a separate developer-controlled surface.
The 10 September date and the Codex harness on an API are first-party, as a public beta. Python, Node and Go SDKs were not confirmed: the post text read shows a JavaScript example only. Anthropic shipping its agent SDK a year earlier was not inspected. Selling the orchestration is the author's framing, since the post says there is no separate Agents API fee. Customer figures in the post are vendor-selected and not independent. The managed Agents API is distinct from the local Codex SDK. The moat moved from models to plumbing is the author's take.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
