openai's agents api remembers nothing on its own. as of september 14, the managed layer only compresses context inside a live session, so the data dies when the session ends unless you build storage around it.
the long-term memory market is still unclaimed.
Context
OpenAI's Introducing the Agents API post of 10 September 2026 describes a public beta, managed, on the Codex harness, that automatically compacts earlier context as a session approaches its context limit. The beta FAQ says it retains session state so work can continue across turns, that sessions and published artifacts can be deleted, and to save any files you need before deleting a session. Responses API server-side compaction and Agents SDK sessions are separate surfaces.
Compaction inside a session is supported. The FAQ was read in a later window than 14 September and cannot show what held that day; it says state is retained until deletion, which does not match data dies when the session ends as a blanket current claim. No first-party cross-session long-term memory store was found in the text read, which is absence in the text read and not proof. As of September 14 is not established. The Agents API, Responses API compaction and Agents SDK sessions are kept separate here. Users on OpenAI's forum and GitHub ask for a memory layer; those are requests and not product behavior.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
