Openai shipped gpt-live-1 to the api at 5 cents a minute
openai shipped gpt-live-1 to the api at 5 cents a minute: full-duplex voice that listens and speaks at once, handles interruptions, and hands harder reasoning to backend models. voice was the last frontier interface without a cheap api.
the phone tree industry just got its disruption notice.
Context
OpenAI's post of 10 September 2026 introduces GPT-Live-1 in the API, able to listen and speak at the same time, handling interruptions with a single model reasoning over incoming and outgoing audio, delegating reasoning and tool calls to a backend text model such as GPT-6 Astra or a third-party model, with telephony support. The model page says voice sessions cost 0.05 dollars per minute, billed per second, and backend model and tool usage is billed separately.
The price is from the current model page, since the announcement text read did not state it, so the launch-date price is unverified. 5 cents covers the voice session only, not the all-in call cost. The last frontier interface without a cheap API has no supporting evidence, since other voice APIs were not examined. The phone tree line is the author's opinion.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.
