openai will retire gpt-5.5 from chatgpt and codex on october 14, while the api keeps serving it. the model that defined last year gets sunset in a month, and every product built on it has to move.
model churn is now a scheduled maintenance event.
Context
OpenAI's ChatGPT docs, read on 4 October 2026, say that on 14 October 2026 GPT-5.5 will retire from ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex on all plans, and that the retirement does not apply to the OpenAI API. For Codex with ChatGPT sign-in it names GPT-6 Sol on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu, and GPT-6 Luna on Free and Go in the desktop app, in both cases when available. The same page lists gpt-5.4 and gpt-5.4-mini as retired from Codex with ChatGPT sign-in on 31 August 2026.
The page is undated and shows the schedule as of 4 October 2026, so it does not show when the retirement was announced; as of that date the retirement is still ahead. The note omits ChatGPT Work. That GPT-5.5 defined last year has no source read, and its release date was not checked. Model churn as scheduled maintenance is the author's opinion.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.
