openhands going cli-first after 18 months as a desktop app is the clearest signal yet that the agent shell is a terminal, not an ide.

cursor, windsurf, trae — every visual wrapper is now a deprecated demo of a tui.

Context

The OpenHands README presents OpenHands CLI as the easiest way to start using OpenHands, familiar to Claude Code and Codex users. OpenHands announced its CLI on 17 June 2025, so a CLI existed well before this note.

How it compares

I found no first-party statement that OpenHands is going CLI-first after 18 months as a desktop app. Release notes in late August and September 2026 mention a Linux desktop installer and a universal macOS DMG, which point the other way. That the agent shell is a terminal and not an IDE, and that visual wrappers are deprecated demos, are the author's opinion with no source on Cursor, Windsurf or Trae.
