perplexity's portable computer landed on windows rtx pcs and the hardware bar is blunt: 24gb of vram, which is roughly an rtx 3090 or higher, with cloud escalation gated behind explicit permission. local agents keep getting better, but the floor keeps climbing too.
private ai is a hardware decision first.
Context
Perplexity's blog of 14 September 2026 says Portable Computer for Windows is available to Pro and Max subscribers on individual and enterprise plans, that on-device inference requires an NVIDIA GeForce RTX or RTX PRO GPU with at least 24GB of VRAM, and that it scales to cloud when requested. Its help article of 15 September says it runs on your own DGX Spark or a supported Windows or Linux PC with a supported RTX GPU, asks permission before routing a step to the cloud, and hides on-device models if the GPU reports less than 24GB. Models listed are PPLX 27B and Qwen 27B.
Windows availability, the 24GB floor, the Pro and Max requirement and permission-gated cloud routing are first-party. Roughly an RTX 3090 or higher is the author's equivalence, not in the text read. This is the Windows launch of a product first introduced on 25 August 2026. Private AI is a hardware decision first is the author's opinion.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
