pnpm 12 quietly rewrote the whole package manager in rust and nobody blinked. every js team just got a free 10x install speedup and the loudest takes of the week were still about whether agents should write tests.
the boring rewrite is the one that compounds.
Context
The pnpm 12 release post says pnpm 12 is stable and is a rewrite of pnpm in Rust, and that upgrading should not feel like a migration. It says latest on npm still points at pnpm 11 and that pnpm 12 installs from the latest-12 tag.
InfoQ reports that pnpm 12 keeps pnpm 11's commands, flags, settings, lockfile format and node_modules layout. The Register and heise report installs up to 90 percent faster in first benchmarks.
Up to 90 percent faster is not the same as 10x, and the 10x figure is not in the release post. Every JS team gets it for free is also not supported, since pnpm 12 is installed from a tag. That the rewrite got little attention is the author's view, and the coverage above shows several outlets reported it.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
