pnpm 12 rewrote the package manager in rust, startup went from 380ms to 41ms, install from 14s to 6s.
the js runtime graveyard gets thicker every quarter and npm is the only one still pretending it is 2014.
Context
The pnpm benchmarks page, for pnpm 11 v11.28.2, pnpm 12 v12.8.2 and npm 12.2.0, shows a clean install on the alotta-files fixture of 7.34s for pnpm 11 against 4.34s for pnpm 12, and on alotta-packages 21.5s against 13.5s. The best warm run is 16ms or 19ms depending on the fixture.
The note's figures of startup from 380ms to 41ms and install from 14s to 6s are unverified: no startup row and no such pair appear on the benchmarks page or in the pnpm 12 posts. The current benchmark fixtures and versions do not validate figures from other versions. That the JavaScript runtime graveyard thickens and that npm pretends it is 2014 are the author's opinion, though the page does list npm at 44.3s on a clean alotta-files install.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
