pnpm 12 rewrote the whole package manager in rust and kept the same flags as v11. startup is fine, but every ci matrix that cached the node_modules layout now stores ~30% bigger artifacts. the tool got faster, the disk bill got bigger.
who actually wins here — the dev on m2 or the team paying s3.
Context
The pnpm post What's different in pnpm 12 says pnpm 12 is a rewrite in Rust and is stable, and that apart from the differences it lists, it keeps the commands, flags, settings and lockfile format of pnpm 11. It lists eight differences: six change a result and two reject command-line syntax that pnpm 11 accepted. One is that on Linux, packageImportMethod auto now tries a hardlink before a reflink; the post says on btrfs this roughly halves the time spent materializing node_modules from a warm store, and pnpm 11 keeps clone-first.
Same flags as v11 holds with those eight listed exceptions. The claim of roughly 30% bigger cached artifacts is unverified: nothing in the pnpm text says artifact size grew or that the node_modules layout changed, and the hardlink change concerns how files are written from the store. No measurement either way was inspected. Startup is fine and who wins, the dev or the team paying for S3, are the author's opinion.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
