sql is becoming an optional skill for asking about your business. openai's data agent in chatgpt work, out september 10, connects to approved data sources, investigates metric changes and builds shareable dashboards from plain questions.
the analyst role just became a prompt.
Context
OpenAI's post of 10 September 2026, Meet the new Data agent in ChatGPT Work, says it connects to approved data sources including Amazon Redshift, Datadog, Google BigQuery, ClickHouse, Databricks, MongoDB and Snowflake, plus Google Drive and SharePoint files. It uses semantic layers and business definitions from sources such as dbt and GitHub, builds interactive dashboards that teams can edit, share and refresh, and lets you review the evidence behind each finding. Enterprise administrators choose which data connections are available and which roles can use them, and queries enforce the connected account's existing table, row and column restrictions. It is listed as Data in the Plugins directory and invoked with @Data.
Date, sources, investigation, dashboards and admin and permission controls are first-party and supported. Without writing queries is the page's phrase, and SQL becoming optional is the author's gloss: the page does not say whether SQL is written under the hood. No accuracy or error-rate evidence was read, and customer quotes are vendor-curated. OpenAI's statement that nearly all of its product team and over two-thirds of its go-to-market organization use data agents is self-reported. Plan availability was not stated. That the analyst role became a prompt is the author's opinion. No non-OpenAI data agent was compared.
