the agent client just went desktop-first for open weights. cline desktop, out september 14, runs parallel agents against 300+ models and extends them with plugins, mcp servers and skills.
the ide-agnostic client layer is now the model-agnostic one.
Context
Cline's launch post of 14 September 2026 describes Cline Desktop as an early version of its open-source app for open-weight models, with parallel sessions, scheduled tasks and a Marketplace for extending Cline with tools and integrations. It says you can access 300+ models through the Cline provider or open-weight models through ClinePass, or use local models or your own key with 50+ providers, that the Mac app is fully open source, and that downloads are for Mac and Windows (beta). The benchmark numbers on the post are reused from Cline's 2 September harness post and are not a separate Desktop evaluation. The cline/cline repository, read on 4 October 2026, is Apache 2.0 with 67,409 stars.
It is an early version on Mac with Windows in beta. 300+ models is access through Cline's own provider, not all open weights. The post names a Marketplace for tools and integrations, and a separate plugin system, MCP servers and skills as a three-way list was only partly confirmed. Desktop-first is the author's framing: the same harness already ran as an extension and CLI and sessions sync across them. Compared with OpenAI's ChatGPT desktop app, which merged Codex on 9 July 2026, Cline Desktop is open source and model-agnostic where that app is closed and tied to OpenAI models and plans. That the model-agnostic client layer is the new one is the author's thesis.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.
