the ai design tool just went open source and agent-native. opendesign, out september 15, turns a local coding workspace into a design workspace any agent can drive through the skill protocol.
the design file became a repo.
Context
The OpenDesign project FAQ says OpenDesign is the official open-source AI design workspace from the nexu-io/open-design project. It turns a local coding agent into a design engine driven by composable skills and portable DESIGN.md systems, is open source under Apache-2.0, is local first and bring your own key, with the desktop app, daemon and skill runtime running on the user's machine, and has 17 first-party BYOK adapters including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI and Copilot CLI.
Any agent is bounded by agents with adapters or that speak the skill protocol, and the protocol document was not read. No September 15 release page was found, and the FAQ is undated, so the release date is unverified. The vendor is a repository organization and no company or funding was inspected. The comparison with a hosted closed product is the project's own marketing, and agent-native is the project's term. The design file became a repo is the author's take.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
