the boring viz library is quietly winning. plotly's 12-month review, out september 15, counts 415 merged pull requests across dash, plotly.js and plotly.py, plus a 4.0 release with a typescript api — and dash crossed 7 million downloads in a month.
the steady stack outlasts every hype cycle.
Context
A Plotly LinkedIn post dated September 16, 2026 says 12 months, 2 new products, 2 major versions, over 100 contributors. The plotly.js v4.0.0 GitHub release was published on 2026-08-24 and lists enabling TypeScript compatibility and exporting types, and a Plotly community post created September 18, 2026 collects the release notes for plotly.js 4 and plotly.py 7. A Plotly staff forum reply of September 2, 2026 says Dash has merged 209 pull requests year to date with 50 contributors and was downloaded 59M times last month.
The 12-month review itself was not located, and the LinkedIn post carries no 415 count or download figure. The 209 pull requests are Dash only, year to date, and the 59M downloads are another window and probably another metric, so neither is a match for the note's 415 and 7 million nor a substitute, and both note figures stay unverified. The 4.0 release is plotly.js 4.0 on August 24, before the September 15 date in the note, and a typescript api loosely paraphrases exported types. The boring viz library is quietly winning is the author's take.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.
