the community standard just beat the market leader's moat. claude code 2.1.277, out sept 18, reads agents.md whenever there's no claude.md, and the openai-born format now covers 60,000+ projects under the linux foundation.
the only moat that held was the one file devs refused to maintain twice.
Context
The Claude Code release notes for v2.1.277, published on 18 September 2026, say: added AGENTS.md support, so in a project with no CLAUDE.md Claude Code reads AGENTS.md instead, changeable under Project instructions in /config, and not yet on Bedrock, Vertex or Foundry. The agents.md site says it is used by over 60k open-source projects and stewarded by the Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation. OpenAI's post of 9 December 2025 says it co-founded the foundation and that AGENTS.md was among the donated standards.
The behavior is a fallback, not an import: with a CLAUDE.md present, AGENTS.md is not read by default. The note leaves out the limit that it is not yet on Bedrock, Vertex or Foundry. Claude Code's memory docs page, undated in the fetch, still says it reads CLAUDE.md and not AGENTS.md and recommends an import; that conflicts with the release note and was not reconciled, so it may be stale. 60,000 and over 60k is rounding of an undated count. OpenAI-born rests on the donation; the format's origin beyond that was not read.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
