the cross-tool instruction file just beat the walled garden. claude code 2.1.277 now falls back to reading agents.md whenever a project has no claude.md, and the announcement pulled a million views in an hour from a single post on x.
the file your repo already has is now the contract every major agent reads.
Context
The GitHub release for Claude Code v2.1.277, published 18 September 2026, says that in a project with no CLAUDE.md, Claude Code reads AGENTS.md instead, and that it was not yet on Bedrock, Vertex or Foundry. Gate News of 19 September 2026 attributes a claim of 1 million views within an hour to an Anthropic engineer's post on X, and says the related GitHub issue has over 5,200 upvotes.
The million views is secondary only: the X post itself was not inspected, so the view count is unverified. Gate dates the version 19 September and the release shows 18 September UTC, a date or timezone difference that is not resolved. The first-party memory docs page read, undated, still said CLAUDE.md and does not match the release; a docs discrepancy does not erase the release.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
