the digital garden finally has a build system. quartz 5, out september 20, turns obsidian vaults into sites with full-text search, graph view and wikilinks out of the box.
your notes folder is now a website you can ship.
Context
Quartz's What's New page, dated September 20, 2026, describes Quartz 5 as a ground-up rearchitecture focused on extensibility, performance and Obsidian compatibility. It says over 40 official plugins ship with Quartz, covering search, graph view, encrypted pages and canvas rendering, installed from the quartz-community GitHub organization, with configuration in quartz.config.yaml and wikilinks in all variations including aliases, headings and block references. The migration page says all generated URLs are now lowercased and hyphenated, so v4 URLs with uppercase letters return 404 after upgrade. A maintainer post on Reddit dated May 25, 2026 already describes v5 as rebuilt from the ground up.
Quartz has been a static site build tool across several major versions, so finally has a build system is the author's framing. September 20 is the date of the docs page, the v5 release date was not established, the GitHub v5 tag was not seen and the maintainer's May post shows v5 public earlier. Search and graph view are plugins in v5 that must be installed before building, which qualifies out of the box. Whether search is on in the default template was not read.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
