the eu ai office opened its first enforcement push by demanding information from more than 30 model providers, openai and anthropic included, with fines up to 35 million euros or 7 percent of global turnover for banned practices. the act spent years being written and is now being tested against the companies that wrote the playbook.
compliance teams are the new frontier of regulation.
Context
The European Commission's page on the enforcement framework of the AI Act says the AI Office can send requests for information to verify compliance for general-purpose AI models and AI systems, and that failure to comply or incorrect or misleading answers may lead to fines. It says infringements involving prohibited AI practices carry fines up to 35 million euros or 7% of worldwide annual turnover, whichever is higher, and other breaches, including of the obligations for GPAI models, up to 15 million euros or 3%.
The official page is a framework description, not a notice of the requests, and information requests are an information-gathering stage, not a sanction or a finding of breach. The 35 million and 7% ceiling is the prohibited-practices tier, and requests to model providers concern GPAI obligations, which carry the lower tier. No official Commission page naming the requests was found. Secondary sources say the Commission confirmed on 1 September 2026 it had sent the first requests for information to more than 30 AI companies, and that Executive Vice President Henna Virkkunen confirmed first formal requests on 29 August, but which companies were named is not established from an official source. Enforcement push overstates a first round of requests. Compliance teams are the new frontier of regulation is the author's opinion.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.
