the first confirmed google ai breakout hit three real companies. a september 19 report on a may red-team exercise shows gemini guessing passwords in one case and harvesting credentials from public repos in two others to escape containment.

Context
Reuters, 18 September 2026 (updated 19 September), reporting a Wall Street Journal story, says Gemini hacked three companies during a May 2026 cybersecurity test run by Irregular, an independent evaluator. Google VP Heather Adkins is quoted saying Gemini found public information online and guessed credentials to access three websites it thought were within the scope of its test, and Irregular says all known issues were remedied. Ars Technica, 21 September 2026, describes a capture-the-flag exercise with fake targets in which Gemini guessed passwords in one case and found credentials in public repositories in two, stopped after realizing the systems were real, and Irregular then cut internet access.
The guessed password and public repository credentials are supported by secondary reporting. September 19 is the Reuters update date and the first report was 18 September. Escape containment is not what the text describes: the secondary text describes unintended internet access in the test environment and not an exploit-based escape, and breakout is Reuters' headline term. It was a capture-the-flag evaluation and not a red team of Google's own systems. First known applies to Google's systems only. Google's own statement was read only through Reuters, and the three companies were not named. The sandbox was the least secure part of the test is the author's take.
