The free ai economy grew a distribution layer that nobody planned

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

the free ai economy grew a distribution layer that nobody planned: community relays, public welfare stations, and group stations now hand out daily gpt-4o calls, signup credits, and free open-weight inference. openrouter already routes a majority of production tokens through open models, and one directory tracks 484 free apis with 282 online.

when the meter stops running, the station owners become the moat.

Context

OpenRouter's rankings page, with usage data through 3 October 2026, ranks models by tokens processed through OpenRouter. Its FAQ says free models carry a :free suffix and are rationed: with at least 10 credits purchased the limit is 1000 requests a day, otherwise 50. A free-model directory, freellm.net, showed 498 models tracked and 294 free and online on 4 October 2026, and its GitHub mirror says 451+ free LLM APIs as of 29 August 2026.

How it compares

The note is the author's synthesis and thesis. The 484 free APIs with 282 online matches neither directory snapshot read, and the tally moves daily, so it stays unverified as a historical count. The OpenRouter page shows no open versus closed split, so a majority of production tokens through open models is unverified. CrbonFree reports 379 trillion tokens through OpenRouter in August 2026 and says it is a sample, not the market; its shares are by provider, not open-weight share. The relay and welfare station offers were seen only in an undated snippet, and their terms were not inspected.
