the mcp registry crossed 10,000 servers this month, up from 2,000 in january — 5x in nine months. nobody adopts a protocol this fast unless it's solving a real pain.
the package manager era ended; the tool-server era just started.
Context
DevToolHub, dated 11 September 2026, reports that as of 10 September the official MCP registry had 99,114 server-and-version records, collapsing to 30,375 unique servers, roughly 3x about 9,650 in May 2026, and that 62% were published once and never updated. mcpindex.ai reports 38,580 active servers as of 3 October 2026 using its own methodology.
Counts differ by method: records, unique servers and active servers. The note's 10,000 is below every current count read, and the 9,650 figure for May conflicts with crossing 10,000 this month. No January count of 2,000 was inspected, so 5x in nine months is not supported by the data read, and current counts cannot prove a past crossing. No registry-owned dated count was inspected.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
